HISTORY:

  • National Standards in Arts Education created - 1995
  • Maine Learning Results created - 1997
  • Maine Learning Results updated - 2007
  • Argy started working at MDOE - Aug. 2006 
  • Argy conducted a survey to learn the needs of Maine arts educators - 350 educators responded - Winter 2007
  • Argy started the Arts Education List-serv in Jan. 2008 and a weekly newsletter called "news from argy's cubby with a view of the statehouse dome" to communicate with the 350 educators who had responded to the invitation to fill out the survey
  • Argy switched from the weekly newsletter to the meartsed Blog http://meartsed.wordpress.com/ in January 2009 with the main purpose of communicating Department news and arts education news from throughout Maine
  • The List-serv grew one person at a time from 350 in January 08 to 1000 in Jan. 09, to 1023 in May 2011 and to 1213 today.
  • During the school year there were 600-800 visitors each week and during the 2011-12 school year that number grew to 900-1400 each week.
  • First in 10 year state-wide arts education conference, "At the Creative Center" planned by Maine Alliance for Arts Education (MAAE), Maine Arts Commission (MAC) and MDOE with 400 arts educators attending. Keynote speaker was Scott Shuler on arts assessment, Samoset, Rockport - Oct. 2007
  • State-wide arts education conference "The Arts Connect", 350 attendees. Keynote speaker was the 2007 National Teacher of the Year and music educator Andrea Peterson. Point Lookout, Northport - Oct. 2009

  • SEADAE convened an Arts Education Task Force in DC with several organizations. The meeting was hosted by CCSSO and the purpose of this convening was to reach consensus on the next leverage point in the initiative titled National Expectations for Learning in Arts Education, formally adopted by the SEADAE membership at its October 2009 meeting in Cambridge. SEADAE facilitated consensus among a gathering of national partners regarding a re-conceptualization of National Standards for the Arts, endorsed  and supported by MENC , NAEA , EDTA and NDEO . - May 2010

  • National Core Arts Standards writing work continues, Argy meets with SEADAE colleagues in Reston, VA and the writing team chairs for an update of the work. College Board, as part of the coalition, has done extensive research supporting the work which includes the connections of the Common Core State Standards to the National Standards work.   • National Coalition for Core Arts Standards releases PK-8 standards for feedback June 30 - July 15, 2013, several Maine Arts Educators respond.Teacher Leaders send Argy their feedback, compiled for a State of Maine report to the NCCAS.
  • Phase 3 summer institute with 14 new teacher leaders, 21 teachers returning from phase 1 and 2 (all but 3 attended), MECA, June 24, 25, 26, 2013. Focus for phase 3:

  • Maine Curriculum Leaders conference, speaker Robert Marzano, presented on standards based education - Oct. 2008. Wanda asked the question at the end of the day to the PK20 team, so, what do you think of the Department creating the rubrics? Marzano returned to the curriculum leaders conference in Oct. 2009. 
  • Reinventing Schools Coalition (RISC) work introduced to the Department - Nov. 2009
  • RISC training occurred, MDOE PK20 team - Feb. 2009 and March 2009 (David Yanoski participated in second day of the work)

FUTURE:

  • The MAAI will continue to evolve as more arts educators become involved and collaborate and education in general evolves. All educators are invited and encouraged to be part of the MAAI.
